I have a Sony DVD/CD drive and it is having a weird problem where sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When I try to install things it usually (not always) comes up what some kind of read Right error. Also I tried riping a CD and it only got a few seconds on some of the tracks but the others worked fine.

Download the latest drivers off of the internet and try them out if that doesn't work try tech support from Sony. For future reference, don't buy sony products they are overpriced and low quality.

I don't agree that you shouldn't buy Sony necessarily. But maybe for optical drives look else ware based on price.

It could also be that the CDs are dirty or scratched. Try playing them in another computer or put the music CDs in your car. To clean a CD use a dry cloth and rub outward from the center to the edge.

try flashing your bios too if its an error that occurs one time u boot and not the other. sometimes it´s a simple problem of the drive itself u cant fix then i would recommend a new one. they are damn cheap if it´s just a standard cd reader.
cheers

If you flash your bios be careful because if you do one thing wrong then your motherboard is toasted and you will need to replace it. Make sure you have printed instructions before you flash your bios. It could seem easy but, one wrong move could wreck your motherboard!

If you are using Windows, it has standard drivers to run CD and DVD drives. Also, the drive or data cable could be faulty.

If cleaning with a cloth does not work, get a CD/DVD wet cleaning kit. If that does not work, get the CD repaired at your local music or video store.

First try the cds in another computer that you know works if it doesn’t work it is the cds if it does work run UBCD4win and try working with the cds threw the tools they provide if this works we can be reasonably sure the problem is software if it doesn’t then replace the drive if it is software try using the basic windows driver and reinstall the application you are working with
